  1. This is a very unusual piece of American Brilliant cut glass.  

  2. It measures 7-inches from side to side and stands 1 1/4-inches tall; the clear, colorless blank is square with rounded sides.  

  3. The rim features scallops with seven teeth separated by half-rounds with notched edges.  

  4. The plate is very heavy for its size, is deeply cut and entirely wheel-polished to a mirror-like perfection.

  5. Rim similar to Item 4 above and

  6. Straus Imperial and Quaker City Melton are similar patterns.

  7. Similar blank used by Straus, P&B, Quaker City.

Decanter Ruby cut to Clear - Dorflinger Blank

  1. A virtually identical blank is shown on page 18 of the Dorflinger Line Drawings (an ACGA reprint catalog) -- the blank is labeled ‘yacht decanter.’ 

  2. The design of the decanter is not shown in any of the currently known Dorflinger catalogs or books.  

  3. The design is, however, similar to Dorflinger’s “Geneva” design on page 7 of the Line Drawings catalog.

  4. Notching at the intersection of the flutes on the neck of the decanter and the two sets of horizontal miters - 

  5. These are the same as shown on several Dorflinger decanters and carafes.

  6. The bottom of the piece has a 48-point rayed star with varied-length rays. ; both Dorflinger and Hawkes used this motif on their finer pieces.

  7. The decanter weighs 4.4-lbs., stands 7 ½-inches tall with the stopper and has a maximum diameter of 6 ¼-inches.

  3. Likely cut by L. Straus. Very similar to pattern patented in 1905 by Siegel, not named. Called "Joan" by Revi. See p. 108 of Revi.

  4. Not a very good picture in Revi - Comments??

  5. Probably not "Joan" - Warren Biden found another piece that is different than this piece in the center - closely matches a better picture on page STR-60 of the LABAC Ad books.

  6. Back to the drawing board.
