Low Bowl - 9"

Identification Status

Cutting House: Libbey         Pattern: Waverly

Input

  1. Signed Libbey/Sword. Shows considerable WC Anderson influence. Note 5 point Hobstar, etc.

  2. Difficult to find by pattern matching in Libbey catalogs: only on Whiskey in ACGA composite catalog. Side views in LABAC 1901 catalog. Not in 1896 reprint. The cross-cut diamond above the hobstar is the most helpful motif in finding the pattern.

  3. Exact pattern shown in Boggess "Collecting..." C945. Identified as Waverly. Sometimes it pays to start with the reference books, sometimes the catalogs. Either way, you usually pick the wrong one....

  4. Waverly cross checked to catalogs, matched!

Identified by Greg Randall - after Boggess

Tray - 12" x 8"

Identification Status

Cutting House: Bergen         Pattern: Meriden

Input

  1. Unsigned. Similar to Hawkes Norwood. Well cut, extremely fine cross-cut diamond, wheel polished, blown blank.

  2. Note corners - broken pattern, fans inserted. Hobstar points not split. NOT like Hawkes Norwood.

  3. ACGA Bergen 1893 catalog shows bowls and other shapes in Meriden - identical to Hawkes Norwood except the points on the large Hobstar not split. A different size tray does not have this corner treatment, however, identical broken pattern shown on celery shape.

  4. Rather surprising - much higher quality than usual for Bergen.
